This article was orginally published in 2004, then removed from my Web page. It was taking up too much of my time. I got contributions of names from all over, in addition to my own research. Many of the people listed no longer have the jobs or titles noted in this piece. But, since it was an accurate reflection of Jewish influence in America at the time, I leave most of the original text and research as it was in 2004. Some additions may be made from time to time.

August 9, 2004:

This part of my Web page has taken an enormous amount of time and energy. I was impressed and amazed at the influence of Jews in America, especially given their relatively small number in the United States (5,671,000). Now, I am depressed. I am depressed because I can no longer enjoy TV. I am constantly looking for Jewish producers, "experts" who are interviewed on TV, and so on. I find myself reading The Wall Street Journal and highlighting Jewish names. The number is so overwhelming that I cannot concentrate on, or enjoy, most programming on TV - and much of my reading. I finally had to stop taking notes. It was completely distracting me from my TV-viewing experience and my reading.

Today, I have added one name to the list, Eric Stein, who bilked investors out of about $34 million and is now in prison.

(This originally started out as one of the articles in my Web column, "The View From the Outback." As time went on, I found myself adding new Jewish names and comments to the second installment. So, I have cut off additions to the Outback version as of April 20th and posted it on my main Web page as a separate subject. It is hard to tell if a woman is Jewish or merely married to a Jew. So, I went with Jewish names, whether maiden or married name, and let someone e-mail a correction. Otherwise, I would have left out a lot of capable women in these lists.)

After I wrote the piece about how influential Jews are in this country, I found myself sensitized to looking for Jewish experts on TV shows, CEOs, TV writers, TV and movie producers, actors, comedians, authors, and on an on. I was fascinated when Mike Wallace of CBS interviewed Larry King of CNN. Both are Jews. Neither uses their given Jewish last names in their professional work - which as I noted earlier, is not uncommon. Jon Stewart of "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central is brilliant. He often makes jokes about Jews and his own Jewishness. I'm no expert on genealogy, but Jon Stewart does not sound like a Jewish name to me (real name was Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz).

Here is part of the introduction to the first installment of "The Jewish Juggernaut":

Let's get one thing straight. I am not anti-Semitic. In fact, I have dated several Jewish women and got as far with one that we had lunch with the Rabbi and I started studying Judaism - in preparation for marriage. Additionally, I have many close Jewish men friends, mostly in Dallas. One man with whom I feel especially close, is the son of a Jewish man I knew years ago. I once said to his dad, "If I could ever love a man, it would be you." And I did not mean that in a homosexual way, but in an admiring way. My thoracic surgeon is Jewish, my Urologist is Jewish.... And anyone who tries to deny the existence of the Holocaust is misinformed.

Many of my formative years were spent in St. Paul, in a neighborhood with a fairly large Jewish population. The local drugstore-soda fountain was owned by Harold Shapiro. We ate our Pastrami on Rye, with a dill pickle, at Irv's Deli in St. Paul. Mogen David was the first wine I ever drank. There was a clothing store near the Univ. of Minn. run by Jake Jewell. Word got around that there was a Jewish superstition that a Jewish merchant would meet any price in order not to lose his first customer on Monday. So, there was always a line on Monday, trying to be the first customer. We never learned if the story was true, but we did get some pretty inexpensive clothes on those Mondays. In those days, you spoke of "jewing somebody down" as simply a way to get a better price. Now, it is some kind of political heresy to say such a thing. Hey, they invented the concept and taught us to say that. Now, it's some kind of crime against humantity. More PC crap! Schmuck and putz also became everyday words for us as youths.

I mention in the later list of Jewish businessmen one Stephen Pistner. Steve was in my 7th and 8th grade classes at Horace Mann. I have a photo of the 8th grade graduation with Steve in the middle of the front row in his sport jacket. He held several high level marketing jobs, among them the presidency of Montgomery Wards.

In doing my research, I came across two humorous anecdotes which were based on the same premise. Groucho Marx was excluded from a country club with a swimming pool because he was Jewish: “My son’s only half-Jewish. Can he go into the pool up to his knees?” A golf course in Maryland refused to let Sen. Barry Goldwater play there, to which Goldwater (who was half-Jewish) was supposed to have said "I only wanted to play nine holes." I suspect that my friend, pen pal, and fellow ham-operator, Barry Goldwater, may have gotten the idea from Groucho. After all, it was Groucho who had a Congressman on his TV show "You Bet Your Life" and said to him, "Tell me, how long have you been incongruous?" I saw that show and never forgot the line. Groucho was one-of-a-kind.

I have a lot of insightful and often humorous stories that came from my association witn Jewish people over the years. One that comes to mind is from when I lived in Dallas. I had a dining room in my home with an Italian-restaurant theme - with the checkered table cloth and the Chianti bottle with a candle. There was a big green slate on the wall with the Menu written in chalk. Fettuccine al Ricardo, Antipasto, Red wine, White wine, etc., all with the prices. A Jewish lady friend was munching on a bread stick and looked up at the menu. She got up and chalked in a new entry. "Jewish Whine $20 an hour." With inflation that would be about $50 and hour today.

Artur Rubenstein, the legendary pianist, gave a solo concert in Washington, DC, when we lived in the area. At the time, I was studying classical piano with a gifted musician we had first met in Europe. At the concert, we were seated in the first balcony on the keyboard side. There was an overflow crowd and folding chairs had been put on the stage, right up to within a few feet of the left side of the keyboard. During intermission, I noticed that the seat right next to the piano was still empty as it was about time for Rubenstein to resume playing.

I scampered down the stairs, walked briskly onto the stage, and sat down on the chair within feet of Rubenstein's left side. As he played, he would occasionally look over at me. He knew I was enthralled by his playing. What he did not know was that the first classical music I perfected was the first movement of "The Moonlight Sonata," played on a Steinway baby grand I bought when we lived in Rome. I listened to his record of "Moonlight" hundreds of times, for phrasing and tempo, until I could play the first movement nearly flawlessly. But, it was all downhill from there for my playing, since I was preoccupied with being a spy. But, until you have tried it and fallen short, you cannot really appreciate what gargantuan talents Rubenstein, Horowitz, and the others were.

If you are bored watching TV, take a yellow pad and list all the Jews you see on TV in one week, or listed in the credits that roll after a show or movie on TV. And that is only the ones who kept their given surnames. You may need a second yellow pad. Again, I am in awe of Jewish power and brainpower. In law school, I always shied away from a group of Jewish students in the hall arguing a point of law. I knew I probably would come off sounding like a moron. I was the Student Council representative from my class to the faculty. I let that speak for who I was. Forget all that legal mumbo-jumbo. So, don't take my little yellow-pad exercise as something sinister. Just very enlightening.

All of this got me to searching the Internet for famous Jews. There are many sites, some obviously anti-Jew. One site, written by a 17-year-old Jewish girl from London, England, named Rebecca, is a proud page in which she lists Jewish people of note, and provides what appear to be well-researched short biographies of many.

Who Is a Jew?

According to traditional Jewish law, Jewishness is determined by the mother. For example, Steve Ballmer of Microsoft, is often cited as "the World's richest Jew." Steve's mother is Jewish, his father is not. I list some people as "Half-Jewish" whose mother is Jewish. I have gotten e-mails saying that so and so does not consider himself or herself to be Jewish or was not brought up as a religious Jew. I don't care what someone professes to be, or what religion they may have converted to, or whether they were brought up as religious Jews. If at least one parent was Jewish, they are on the list, sometimes with a note about a later preference. Many more probably should be moved to the half-Jewish group, but I do the best I can with the information I find. I list Converts separately.

So, to me, the categories I use are simply pragmatic distinctions, leaving less room for the blurring of ethnicity. To me, Connie Chung is not Jewish, she is Chinese. Larry King may describe himself as an agnostic Jew and be married to a Mormon, but I am only interested in the original cards he, or anyone, was dealt. I am not interested in how many cards were later drawn to try to fill to a royal flush or a full house. I might sing a different tune if I had completed my studies at Temple and married the Jewish lady I spoke of earlier. And changed my name to from Rhodes to Rosen. As it is, if I call a business in New York, I almost always have to say that my name is not Rosen, but Rhodes.

Here are some of the names on the various lists. If any are wrong, or some are only half-Jews, let me know and I will make the corrections. It is not my intention to stigmatize anyone. As I said in part one of this piece, I am simply in awe of the power, influence and brainpower of Jews in this country and around the world. Many of these entries were checked at two or three sources, yet there may be errors.

Changing Jewish Names

In general, there have been a couple of major reasons for Jews to change their names to something more Waspy, or whatever. Many did it to try to escape persecution in Europe. Some entertainers and business people changed their names to avoid possible anti-semitism or to simply avoid an ungainly name if you are famous - such as Woody Allen who was born Allen Stewart Konigsberg. I got an e-mail from a fellow who wanted to add some names to my various lists. Some of the names made no sense to me, such as Brown, Roberts, and so on.

My corespondent gave me a quick lesson in re-naming. A lot Eastern European Jews had names associated with colors, minerals and precious gems, flowers, and geographic sites. So, Braun became Brown, Weiss became White, Rose became Ross, Gruen became Green, Schwartz might become Black, Sapphire became Safir or Safire (William Safire of NY Times comes to mind in this context), and so on. Fascinating. Thanks Charlie. Of course, in Hollywood, Jews who change their name often pick the name out of a hat to something that sounds cool. There are cases where people had to change their "stage name" to something else because somebody registered with the Screen Actor's Guild was already using that name. I think there are cases where a person had to give up their given name because somebody was already using their name as a "stage alias." Unreal.

Golda Meir, Prime Minister of Israel 1969 to 1974. Born Goldie Mabovitz in Kiev, Russia, in 1898. Moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with her family at age 8. She attended Milwaukee Teachers College and later taught in the public school system. Married Morris Meyerson (Goldie Mabovitz Meyerson). Moved to Tel Aviv in 1921. Adopted the name of "Golda." With the declaration of the state of Israel in 1948, Golda (Goldie) Meyerson was one of the signatories. Became ambassador to the Soviet Union. Later elected as a member of the Knesset. In 1956 changed her name from Meyerson to the Hebrew "Meir." Became Prime Minister in 1969 at the age of 70. If Ben-Gurion is known as the "father of Israel," Golda Meir is known as "the mother of Israel." Golda Meir died in Jerusalem on Dec. 8, 1978.

Talking Heads and Experts Who Appear on TV:

This is an amazing phenomenon. On any given network news show, the experts brought on may be 75% - or more - Jewish. Part of the reason is that the major TV networks are headquartered in New York, which has a very large Jewish population. Putting aside any conversation about Jews, it is obvious that the liberal agenda of the TV media is fed by the ultra-liberal college and university campuses in the East - and the academic talking-heads and experts from these colleges and universities that permeate TV shows. Jew, gentile, black, Arab, Asian, Hispanic, or whatever - we are constantly bombarded with "experts" from the East coast. How different it might be if the major networks were headquartered in Chicago, or Des Moines, or Dallas, or Denver.

In this section, I note a single TV news show or symposium and list all the Jews who appeared on that single show. I may have gotten a few wrong. As a Jewish lady-friend of mine wrote to me about a famous female network reporter, who is not widely known as being Jewish, "what else could she be?"

**The fact that Ringo Starr shows up on lists of Jews is what is problematic with "lists" in general. Ringo was born Richard Starkey, named after his dad, Richard. His mother was Elsie. His kids are Jason, Zak, and Lee. But, I can find no biography or comment with any weight that confirms that Ringo Starr is Jewish. During a concert tour in 1964 in Canada, death threats were made against the "English Jew, Ringo Starr." To which Ringo replied,"I am English, but I am not Jewish." More research is called for. It doesn't help Ringo's assertion that he is not Jewish that in 1981 he married Barbara Bach (Barbara Goldbach), although there are lots of inter-faith marriages.

Judy Garland is listed on some sites as being Jewish. After many hours of searching, I can find no convincing evidence of this. Her parents were Frank Avent Gumm and Ethel Marion (Milne) Gumm. Only if Milne (her mother's maiden name) is Jewish, is there any possibility that Judy was Jewish. One site says that her parents were Presbyterians. They lived in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, when Judy was born, and this small Midwestern town probably had few Jews. Judy was named Frances Ethel Gumm and later changed to Frances Garland and then to Judy Garland. One intriguing quote came from a Jewish site talking about music, and here is the quote: "Are any of us familiar with the names Allen Koenigsberg, Francis Gumm and Issur Danielovitch? Some of us may spot that these were the original names of the movie stars Woody Allen, Judy Garland and Kirk Douglas...." Since Woody Allen and Kirk Douglas are both Jews, it is interesting that Judy Garland was placed in the same sentence. Hank Greenberg deserves special mention. Hank was the first Jewish superstar, years before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball. Greenberg hit 58 home runs and was close to Ruth's 60 HR record, but he got a lot of walks and many think there were a substantial number of people in baseball who did not want a Jew breaking Ruth's record. Hank Greenberg was inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame in 1956. He later became the first Jewish owner/general-manager with the 1954 Cleveland Indians.

One site claims: "According to 2000 US census figures, Jews make up only 2.5% of the total US population. Yet Jews own and control 98% of all US media." That may be a bit of a stretch. There are little more than 13 million Jews in the world, comprising less than 1/4 of 1% of the world's population! But when you start counting heads in print journalism, TV, movies, book publishing, and so on, the number is staggering.

Members of the Writers Guild are variously reported to be from 70% or higher Jewish. Jay Leno frequently says on the Tonight Show when there are Jewish holidays, either,"You can tell the Jewish writers are off." Or, "I'll be glad when the Jewish writers get back."
